Job Title: Registered Veterinary Technician - Animal Hospital Location: San Francisco,CA
Job Description: Essential Duties and Functions: Veterinary Medical Care Monitor the health of hospitalized patients and notify a veterinarian if symptoms may warrant attention Triage cases according to medical need Perform and interpret basic diagnostic tests such as, but not limited to, fecal floatation, skin scrapes, heartworm test, FeLV/FIV tests, etc. Induce and maintain anesthesia Prepare patients for surgery and assist in surgery Perform venipuncture, x-rays, laboratory tests, IV catheter placement and drug and fluid calculations as ordered by the veterinary staff Perform intramuscular and subcutaneous injections Clean and pack surgical instruments Administer medications to animals as directed by staff veterinarians; perform medication and fluid calculations as necessary Operate an autoclave Follow veterinary care protocols for animals in the SF/SPCA Animal Hospital - including medical, behavior and general care protocols for the health and well-being of the animals; individually and as a herd Comply with all laws pertaining to controlled substances Perform dental prophylactic cleaning and basic dental procedures and extractions Participate in medical rounds as directed by the staff veterinarian Understand standard veterinary terminology, procedures and animal health issues Facilitate good working relationships through teamwork and collaboration Administrative Duties Maintain and create patient records by accurately recording treatments, examinations and test results on computerized patient charts and other medical records Participate in regular staff meetings Assist with keeping inventory and ordering supplies Client and Community Service Admit and releases animals from the Animal Hospital in a responsive, courteous and tactful manner to both internal and external clients Inform clients of any pertinent medical information on animal care – communicates release instructions Practice and encourage the humane treatment of animals Provide quality customer service to clients, volunteers, and staff while actively promoting our mission, services, programs and events Promote donation and giving opportunities as appropriate Assist Client Services personnel to ensure smooth, courteous handling of clients and their pets Contribute to effective teamwork by promoting inter and intra departmental cooperation Safety Ensure a safe work environment by following all safety guidelines and modeling safe work practices Take immediate action to address any safety concerns that could put a staff member, volunteer, customer, animal, or the organization at risk Volunteers Work cooperatively with all volunteers and recognize the talent and commitment they bring to the Society Reporting Relationships and Contacts: Reports to the Animal Hospital Veterinary Technician Supervisor Physical Requirements and Work Environment: Work is performed in a shelter/animal hospital setting Frequent standing, bending, reaching, kneeling, and climbing stairs while seeing patients Regular sitting at a computer workstation 4-6 hrs per day to input patient data Regularly moves about the campus to coordinate work Exposure to disinfectant solutions when in kennel & treatment areas Subject to animal bites and scratches while handling animals Repeated lifting and carrying of animals weighing up to 50 pounds Consistent exposure to animals and animal allergens under conditions with limited alternatives available Tetanus and rabies (pre-exposure) inoculations are required or must be waived Education and Experience: Registered Veterinary Technician in the state of California Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Commitment to the mission, values, goals, and success of the San Francisco SPCA Experience with humane animal handling and restraint techniques of healthy, ill and feral animals Experience in caring for and handling animals in a safe, effective and humane manner, especially larger and possibly untrained pets Willing to accommodate animals in the work place Computer literate and able to master veterinary software as applicable to hospital operations Knowledge of basic dog and cat physiology, anatomy and behavior as it relates to understanding the general health of animals Ability to accommodate varied work assignments and schedules Excellent leadership and communication skills; ability to provide direction and supervision to employees and volunteers Professional and mature manner, personal conduct and appearance Ability to understand and communicate pertinent medical information with colleagues and clients Self-motivated and able to initiate and complete tasks Salary and Benefits: The starting salary for this position depends on the length and breath of experience. Job Description: Essential Duties and Functions: 1. Veterinary Medical Care Adhere to veterinary care protocols for patients in the SF SPCA Hospital - including medical, behavior and general care protocols for the health and well-being of the patients Patient triage: physical exam and vital sign assessment Monitor hospitalized patients’ status and notify attending veterinarian if symptoms warrant attention Nursing care and treatment of hospitalized patients Critical care nursing Intravenous and urethral catheterization Medical calculations including CRIs, fluid therapy, kcal requirements Anesthesia induction, monitoring, and recovery Perioperative nursing care Perform dental prophylaxis, treatments and extractions Sample collection, laboratory procedures and interpretation Diagnostic imaging Equipment maintenance and operation Comply with all laws pertaining to controlled substances Participate in medical rounds as directed by the staff veterinarian Facilitate good working relationships through teamwork and collaboration 2. Administrative Duties Provide leadership, supervision and coaching for the veterinary support staff; sustain a strong commitment to teamwork, high professional standards and continuing development Provide staff development through teaching, mentoring and training Develop and implement protocols relating to nursing care procedures Improve nursing care work systems, documents and processes throughout CVS Participate in the recruitment, selection and training of veterinary support staff Participate in team meetings and intra-departmental meetings Veterinary support staff scheduling Maintain attendance records and process payroll Assist with keeping inventory and ordering supplies Maintenance of patient medical records Research, recommendation and implementation of current medical equipment Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills in demanding work environment 3.
